Affiliate Marketing – The Learning Curve
Many new internet marketers, when they first hear about affiliate marketing, assume it’s an easy way to make money. All they have to do is put some banners on their website and the passive income will roll in…right? Wrong. There’s much more to it than that. The bad news is that many would-be affiliate marketers won’t make any money from it. The good news is that if you put in a bit of time and effort and employ the correct marketing techniques, you will be ahead of many in the game.
The thing that most new affiliates fail to realise (and I was one of them) is that without lots of visitors to your site, i.e. traffic, you won’t make money. Furthermore, it needs to be targeted traffic. In other words, the people coming to your site need to have an interest in the products featured on it. Then they need to be persuaded to buy the affiliate product (this is called converting).
Fortunately, there are a myriad ways to optimize your site to make it more search-engine friendly and to persuade people to visit it. You need to learn SEO techniques, and you need to discover the ways to drive traffic to your site. Along the way you need to learn how to test what works and doesn’t work on your site (hint: loads of banners on a web page are off-putting).
You also need to pick the right merchants – ones that offer a decent commission, give you a variety of affiliate tools and whose product matches the content of your site.
Finally, you need patience. Successful income generation is possible through affiliate marketing, and a great many make a good living from it. If you want to be one of them, then you need to go through that learning curve. It’s an ongoing process, but in time your expanding knowledge will lead you to affiliate marketing success.
