How to set up a hosted Wordpress blog with cPanel
It took me a while to realise what the Fantastico button was for on cPanel. Once I’d discovered that it made setting up blogs a breeze, I couldn’t get enough of it. Virtually all my sites are now Wordpress-based rather than html sites. Read on for a quick tutorial.
This tutorial assumes that you have a domain name or subdomain and cPanel hosting. To set up a blog (in less time than it takes to read this), go to cPanel and look for the Fantastico button, near the bottom of the main control page under the Software/Services section. It’s a big blue Smiley button, you can’t miss it. Click on it. Then click on the Wordpress link under “Blogs” in the left navigation column. That takes you to the main Wordpress installation page.
Look for the blue link named New Installation and click on it. The next thing is to choose the domain you’re going to install the blog on. If you have more than one domain then use the drop down list to pick. I never fill in the box marked “install in directory”, as I always put my blogs in the root directory (it’s done automatically).
Next, fill in the admin access data. This is what will be used to get into your blog dashboard when it’s set up. Make your username something that you can remember, or use a generic term like admin. Add a password.
Next is the base configuration. Don’t worry too much about what you input as it can all be changed later. You may want to put admin again for the nickname; the email is contact details for the blog. I generally put it as admin@mysite.com and create that email address via cPanel (more on that in another tutorial). The site name should be separate words; on most Wordpress themes these will show up in your blog header. The description should just be a very quick summing up of the site; it will show as a tagline on certain theme headers.
Once you’ve done that, click on the Install Wordpress button. When you arrive at the next page, click on Finish Installation.
Guess what? Your blog is now set up. Look down the page that’s come up and you’ll see the url to your blog dashboard – click and you’ll be taken to your sign-in page. Remember to bookmark it. Log in and start using your blog!
